Climate DetailsThe arctic tundra is famous for its harsh cold temperatures and desert-like conditions. The arctic tundra receives little rainfall, receiving only 250 mm of precipitation annually, in which the precipitation usually falls as snow. The temperatures of the arctic tundra remain less than 0°C mostly throughout the whole year; with average annual temperatures of -28°C, which can plummet to temperatures as low as -70°C. In winter, the average temperature is -34°C, while, in summer, average temperatures range from 3-12°C, which enables the sustaining of life in the biome.
The arctic tundra has two main seasons, summer and winter. It also experiences spring and autumn, but only for a short period of time. Nights in the arctic tundra can last for weeks on end when the sun hardly rises during winter. During summer, the sun shines continuously for almost 24 hours a day, hence giving it the name ‘Land of the Midnight Sun.’ |
